How to Tolerate An Idiot

After experiencing the last couple of weeks since the inauguration, I think it’s high time I finally get around to talking about the all-important skill of How to Tolerate an Idiot.
This week on the Surrounded by Idiots Radio Podcast, I wanted to share my surefire technique on how to deal with a person that has a VASTLY different view of the world than you do, and how you should handle things if they are trying to convince you that they are right and you are, well…wrong.
I mean, c’mon man! what’s the deal with “post-truth” and how is it that anyone can get away with framing anything as an “alternative fact”…are you at all serious right now??
Sadly, one of the byproducts of this crap being floated around is that a lot of people are jumping on this bandwagon and waving the flag in the name of Idiots everywhere.
So, now seemed like as good a time as ever to outfit you with the step by step technique I developed to help you to navigate a conversation or an incident with someone that sees the world a lot different than yourself.
Here are the steps
1. Interrupt your bubbling emotional feelings before you start a shouting match with an idiot. This is done by asking yourself “Why am I so fired up about this?”
2. Realize there is a chance you both want the same outcome but have different opinions on how to get there.
3. Do everything in your power not to “react” when they start on their crazy, insane rant.
4. Calmly let them know that you don’t share their particular vision and then start asking QUESTIONS (the secret weapon)…first question being, “Why do you believe that?”
5. Keep asking questions until they either realize that they really don’t know exactly why they have that belief, or when they stomp off in a rage or when they try to turn in back on you and ask you the same questions.
This technique will actually help both of you…with you, it will keep you from getting overly emotional and irrational…for the other person, it will provide an opportunity for them to discover really where a belief comes from…should they own it as their own or is it a belief from mom or dad that they shouldn’t follow anyway.
You get this technique down, I guarantee you your tolerance level for differences of opinion will go way up and you’ll save yourself a bunch on anxiety medication and/or alcohol, which happens to be my chosen self-medication from time to time.
